What Is AC Motor Controller?
An AC motor controller, often called a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD).AC motor controller is an electronic device designed to regulate the operation of alternating current (AC) motors, including asynchronous induction motors and synchronous motors widely used in industrial applications. It controls key motor parameters such as speed, torque, start-stop mode, and running direction to meet the diverse operational requirements of different industrial equipment.
How it Works (VFD Example)
Rectifier: Converts incoming three-phase AC power into DC power.
DC Link: Smooths and stores this DC power.
Inverter: Uses electronic switches (like transistors) to create a new, variable-frequency, variable-voltage AC output, controlling the motor's speed and torque.
Core Working Principles
1. Voltage/Frequency Regulation (V/F Control)
A basic control method that maintains a constant ratio of voltage to frequency when adjusting motor speed, ensuring stable magnetic flux in the motor stator and avoiding overheating or torque loss during low-speed operation.
2. Vector Control
An advanced control technology that decouples the stator current of the motor into two components: torque current and excitation current. It enables independent and precise control of motor torque and speed, achieving high-precision speed regulation even at low speeds.
3. Direct Torque Control (DTC)
A high-dynamic performance control method that directly adjusts the stator voltage vector of the motor to control the torque and flux linkage, featuring fast response speed and strong anti-interference ability.

3. Protection Function

4. Intelligent Control & Monitoring
